*Job responsibilities*:
* Represent indigent clients in their appeals of trial level cases to the Eleventh District Court of Appeals and the Ohio Supreme Court.
* Review case files and court dockets to gather pertinent information.
* Meet with clients to discuss their appellate issues and the status of their appeals.
* Interact with court staff, prosecutors, private attorneys and court reporters regarding issues related to the appeal.
* File Notices of Appeal, file motions to stay and to obtain bond pending appeal, obtain transcripts and case records and ensure case records are timely filed in appellate courts.
* Research and analyze legal issues related to assigned cases.
* Draft legal documents, including motions, briefs, and pleadings.
* Communicate regularly by phone, letter or in person with clients regarding the status of their appeals.
* Appear in front of 11th District Court of Appeals and the Ohio Supreme Court for oral argument on cases appealed.
* Identify, research and address other post-conviction issues, filing motions and briefs when appropriate.
* Advocate for clients' rights and best interests throughout the legal process.
* Collaborate with other members of the defense team, including trial attorneys, law clerks and paralegals.
* Attend court hearings, trials, and other legal proceedings as required.
*Experience and Skills*:
* Juris Doctor (J.
D.
) degree from an accredited law school.
* Licensed to practice law in Ohio.
* Prior experience handling criminal appeals is helpful, but not required.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Significant legal research, writing and oral advocacy skills and experience.
* Ability to work independently and manage a caseload effectively.
* Demonstrated commitment to providing quality legal representation to underprivileged individuals.
* Knowledge of criminal law and procedures.
* Excellent judgment and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and work effectively with clients, office personnel, court personnel, prosecutors, law enforcement, probation officers, social workers and the general public.
*Pay*: The salary varies depending upon the number of years of experience as a criminal defense attorney, but the minimum starting salary for new attorneys is $75,000.

, Monday - Friday, but longer hours may be required with evening or weekend work depending upon status of cases.
